Welcome to Data Profiler release 4.2. This document contains the most up-to-date information on the software and may supersede certain information in the product documentation. It contains the following sections:

What’s New in Data Profiler 4.2?

The following features are enhancements to previous versions of Data Profiler:

Environments Supported

This release has been tested on the following environments:

System
Supported Versions
Hardware Platform
Microsoft Windows
2003 Server R2 SP1
XP SP2
Vista Ultimate, Enterprise and Business
x86
Linux
Redhat, Suse (engine only)
x86

Windows System Requirements

The following resources are the minimum recommended:

These system requirements are the minimum for satisfactory operation. For higher performance, be certain that there is physical memory to meet the requirements of the local system and all applications.

A large, complex profile may consume so much memory that it will not execute. Where business processes permit, redesign of the profile may resolve this issue.

Data Profiler 4.2 is a 32-bit application. Using a 64-bit operating system and more than 4 GB RAM is not recommended and does not help performance.

Best practice is to execute large, complex processes only on machines that have sufficient memory to load all components of the process while supporting the operating system and all other open applications.

Note  Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 are not supported in this release. Technical support is not provided for these operating systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

This section presents frequently asked questions you may encounter.

Installing Data Profiler

Prerequisites

Obtain Installation and License Files

You are provided with an .msi installation file and an .slc license file. To obtain either of these files, contact your sales engineer or sales representative.

Important Notes for Version 4.0 Users

If you have version 4.0 installed, before you install version 4.2, follow the instructions in Exporting Version 4.0 Projects into a 4.2 Workspace. Then once you have exported the projects, you can install version 4.2. If you have already removed version 4.0, see Alternate Method for Importing Version 4.0 Projects.

You cannot have both Data Profiler versions 4.0 and 4.2 installed on the same computer. When you begin your installation of version 4.2, you are informed that version 4.0 will be removed. Only the application is removed, leaving all your project artifact files in their original locations. If you wish, back up the Workspace and License folders.

Exporting Version 4.0 Projects into a 4.2 Workspace

But because of changes to accommodate Windows Vista users, the workspace directory path has changed to the following:

\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CompanyName\Data Profiler 4.2\workspace

Note  If you have already removed version 4.0, see Alternate Method for Importing Version 4.0 Projects.

To be able to see your 4.0 projects in the Project Navigator tree, do the following.

To export 4.0 projects and import into 4.2 workspace

  1. Open Data Profiler 4.0.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the Project Navigator and select Export.

  8. Expand the Data Profiler node, select Import Data Profiler project and click Next.
  9. Click Browse to navigate to the .zip file you created in step 6. The .zip file was written to the default installation directory:

    \Program Files\InstallDir\Data Profiler 4.2

  10. Select the file and click Open.
  11. Review the list of projects and click Finish.
  12. The imported projects are written to the Project Navigator tree. If any project contains errors, those errors are displayed in the Problems pane. For instance, if a data set is missing a part value, the resource and path are listed under Errors.

Alternate Method for Importing Version 4.0 Projects

If you have already have removed Data Profiler version 4.0, to avoid removing version 4.2 and reinstalling version 4.0, complete the following steps.

  2. Create a .zip file containing the projects you wish to import into version 4.2. The .zip file must contain all project artifacts, including the following:
    • .project file
    • .dp.xml file
    • data set or connection files
    • script files
    • source files
  3. Open the .zip file to verify that all file paths start with project names.
  4. Open Data Profiler version 4.2, right-click anywhere in the Project Navigator, and select Import.
  5. Expand the Data Profiler node, select Import Data Profiler project and click Next.
  6. Click Browse to navigate to the .zip file you created in step 2.
  7. Select the file and click Open.
  8. Review the list of projects and click Finish.
