General Information

Welcome to the Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) Release.

This release delivers a number of updates and requested changes to Pervasive.SQL V8.

Note:   What’s New in Pervasive.SQL V8, included in your online documentation, contains information about the new features in the V8 releases compared with the last major version of the product. You can view this documentation via the Start Menu by selecting Start | Programs | Pervasive.SQL V8 | Documentation | Whats New.

There are four different installs, one each for NetWare Servers, Windows Servers, Linux Servers, and Workgroup Engine. Each one is a complete installation program (patch installations are not available). Except for Linux, the 8.7 installations can also be used to upgrade a previous version of Pervasive.SQL.

To update your client installations, install the server first. Then install the client at each client computer by mapping a drive to the server and running setup.exe from the server directory C:\pvsw\clients (or your chosen installation location).

Installation Notes

This release has been tested in a variety of configurations.

After reading these notes, see Getting Started with Pervasive.SQL for installation procedures.

New Features and Enhancements

This section describes the new features, enhancements, or significant changes in behavior that are offered in this release.

Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7)

The SP3 (8.7) release contains an updated installer compared with the 8.5 and SP2 (8.6) releases. This is the only functionality change compared with the previous V8 releases. Getting Started with Pervasive.SQL documents the new installer.

Embedding Pervasive.SQL

The updated installer used in Pervasive.SQL SP3 (8.7) requires that you alter the parameters of your call-out installations compared with that of the Pervasive.SQL 8.5 and 8.6 releases.

To prepare your product installation to call the Pervasive.SQL installation, create a directory on your CD image. You may name the directory whatever you choose. The example code below uses the directory name psql. Copy the contents of the appropriate Pervasive install program directory to the directory on your install image.

The command to call-out to a Pervasive.SQL installation located in a “psql” subdirectory is:

psql\setup.exe -SMS

Note:   Note The -SMS options keep the setup.exe in memory until the installation is complete. This is useful because the setup.exe is simply an InstallShield loader application that terminates as soon as the installation is loaded. It is also possible to omit the -SMS options and wait for the _ISDEL module to terminate.

A silent install requires the “-s” command line option. The command to call-out to a Pervasive.SQL installation and have it run silently is:

psql\setup.exe -s -SMS

To change the default behavior of a call-out installation, edit the ptksetup.ini configuration file. This file is located in the same directory as the other installation files, including setup.exe. It is in the form of a Windows initialization file. It contains settings that can be modified programmatically or with a text editor. You can modify these settings to specify the components that do or do not get installed when the installation program is executed.

Please see What’s New in Pervasive.SQL V8 for a description of all new features in V8 as well as documentation for the use of these features. What’s New in Pervasive.SQL V8 is included in your product installation in HTML Help (.CHM) format.

Environments Supported

This section lists the platforms and environments on which Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) has been tested.

Server Engine

The Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) Server was tested on the following:

Workgroup Engine

The Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) Workgroup was tested on the following:

Tool for Running Workgroup Engine as a Windows Service

A tool that installs the Workgroup engine as a service is available on the Pervasive Component Zone web site. The tool is unsupported and available only on an as-is basis. To download the tool, visit the following URL and select the "Toolbox - WGE as an NT Service." link.

http://www.pervasive.com/ComponentZone/Component/Lookup.asp?Function=ShowComponents&ID=6&Category=Tools+%2F+Utilities

After downloading the file:

  1. Place the tool in the BIN directory where your Pervasive files are installed.
  2. Shut down your Workgroup engine.
  3. Double-click PVSW.EXE to run the tool.
  4. From the menu, choose Tools | WGE as a Service.

The next screen provides the option to install the Workgroup engine as a service. Before you do so, click Info and follow the instructions provided.

Clients

Documentation Notes

This section provides information regarding the documentation included with the Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) product.

HTML Help and Internet Explorer

This release includes support for Microsoft HTML Help on Windows based platforms (files with .CHM extension).

HTML Help uses components of the Internet Explorer (IE) engine to display help files. A defect in the early versions of IE 5 (and some 5.5 versions) causes display irregularities with modular HTML Help systems. These display conditions may be seen in PVSWDOCS.CHM, the master help file for Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) that dynamically loads the other help files. Since this defect affects only the file merging mechanism, you will see no display irregularities when loading individual help files. Some specific symptoms you may encounter are:

If you encounter any of these display conditions, the solution is to upgrade to IE 5.01 or higher. You may download version 5.01 or higher from Microsoft’s web site. You can determine your version by clicking Help | About Internet Explorer from the browser window.

If your Internet Explorer version is one of the following, or a later version, then your HTML Help should function correctly.

IE Version
Description
5.00.2919.6307
Internet Explorer 5.01
5.00.3105.0106
Internet Explorer 5.01 with Service Pack 1
6.00.2800.1106
Internet Explorer 6.00 with Service Pack 1

Windows XP Professional and XP Home includes IE 6.0. Windows 2000 and Windows ME shipped with IE 5.01 so you should not see the display irregularities on those platforms, nor with older IE 4 versions.

Known Issues

This section documents the known issues for this release. These issues are priority candidates for the next service pack release of Pervasive.SQL. The issues are organized alphabetically by component area, then numerically by tracking number within the component area.

Tracking Number
Description
Documentation
52145
The Pervasive.SQL Programmer’s Guide manual in the 8.5 and 8.6 SDKs incorrectly states that you can specify a drive letter in the dbfile= parameter of a URI. The What’s New document in this release correctly states the dbfile use cases.
Installation
52141
If you disable the Pervasive Control Center installation using Ptksetup.ini, the SQL interface and GUI version of the License Administrator are also disabled. The command line version of License Administrator will still function correctly in this configuration.
52107
You cannot upgrade the Linux server release from a previous V8 release. Instead, you should remove the previous version and then install V8 SP3 (8.7).
To remove the previous version of Pervasive.SQL for Linux, enter the following under the root user account:
rpm -e ‘Pervasive.SQL’
PSA
52097
After upgrade of Pervasive.SQL 2000i (SP4) to Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7), duplicate keys for Pervasive.SQL exist in the registry (keys for 8.7 and the prior version). This does not not affect using Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7).
52161
Upgrading to Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7) and then archiving 8.7 leaves a few files in PVSW\bin from the previous release. This applies only to upgrading from versions of Pervasive.SQL in the “V8” family (V8, V8.5, or V8.6).
This does not not affect using Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7).
52160
After upgrade, Start menu contains two entries for Pervasive.SQL. This occurs if the previous version of Pervasive.SQL V8 (V8, V8.5, or V8.6) was installed using the Custom installation choice.
This does not not affect using Pervasive.SQL V8 SP3 (8.7).
