âWith six regional offices across Honduras, each with different computing requirements, SANAA needed a database that could seamlessly scale from workstation to peer-to-peer and to client-server architectures. Pervasive.SQL was the clear choice.â

About Sisteco and SANAA
When Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras on Halloween day in 1998,the resulting floods devastated the Central American nationâs infrastructure. Among the hard-hit agencies was SANAA (Servicio Autónomo de Acueductos y Alcantarillado),Hondurasâlargest potable water supplier based in the capital city of Tegucigalpa.Flood waters wiped out SANAAâs computing resources, destroying a billing and customer services system used for more than 20 years. In the aftermath of the storm,SANAA struggled with data recovery and a provisional billing system until it became essential to acquire an entirely new system.Sisteco S.A.de C.V.,a computer services organization, came to the rescue.Sisteco was created to manage the development and deployment of the new water billing system, along with integrated accounting and human services modules, for SANAA.
Business Challenge
Develop and deploy a cost-effective,easy-to-maintain database system to automate water billing in Honduras in the wake of a hurricane.
Pervasive.SQL 2000 Solution
With hardware donated from international relief funds from the U.S. and other countries,SANAA began searching for a new water billing computer system.Progress,Oracle and Informix presented their solutions, but their database products were expensive, and the ongoing database administration costs,as well as required maintenance contracts, would have added to the expense in the long run.
Sisteco recommended a solution based on the powerful,maintenance-free Pervasive.SQL database engine.SANAA recognized the clear advantages of Pervasive.SQLâs âinstall it and forget itâapproach to database administration. Sistecoâs engineering team began the data conversion in August 1999 and launched the Pervasive.SQL-based ECO-2000 water billing system in early September. The new billing system has automated most of the manual billing processes done in the past, offering better customer service with up-to-the-second on-line information,as well as the power to perform real-time analysis of billing issues.
Bottom Line
Sisteco brought the ECO-2000 application on-line one year after Hurricane Mitch struck Honduras.Today, thanks to Pervasive.SQL,SANAA can exploit critical data with all the tools Pervasive.SQL has to offer.
