PROCOM Ges.m.b.H provides mobile Computer Aided Selling (CAS) and closed-loop Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solutions to mid-sized European companies in the food management, luxury and watch-making industries. PROCOM is based in Leonding, Austria, with 40 associates and annual sales topping â¬6.5 million.
Business Challenge
PROCOM customers share a requirement for a mobile CAS/CRM solution, as they frequently work with their clients at distributed locations. Therefore, the information they use must be up-to-date, reliable and always available; short throughput times are critical. Since 1989, PROCOM has relied on Btrieve® as its database management system (DBMS). With the growth of its customer base, PROCOM needed a new DBMS which was up to the challenge of moving more data faster between disparate locations.
"In addition, our customers are interested in a low-maintenance and 'easy-care' solution, since their employees are not engineering experts," adds Josef Mayr, PROCOM's general manager. For this reason, the database chosen to power PROCOM's applications needed to meet the criteria of outstanding ergonomics, good integration, ease of modification and standards-based connectivity. Also, as PROCOM developers work in a Magic development environment, compatibility with Magic was key.
Pervasive.SQL Business Solution

Upgrading to Pervasive.SQL presented multiple benefits for PROCOM developers. The industry standard interfaces for ODBC, OLE DB and JDBC ensured that this new, more powerful DBMS was easy to develop on and deploy. Even in a non-Magic environment, such as Microsoft Visual, Delphi or Cobol, Pervasive.SQL remains in play. Transactional operations have hit new performance records. And, importantly, the upgrade required minimal training time and expense.
The simple Pervasive.SQL deployment model corresponds to the short sales cycles required by PROCOM's customers. Automatic configuration functions and inter-platform architecture ensure that once the administration is set up, the DBMS runs practically maintenance-free. "Its reliability and ease of use is a decisive sales argument for us. We know that the Pervasive database is working quietly behind the scenes. And our customers don't have to worry about it," explains Mayr.
While low administration is a key factor for PROCOM, scalability is also crucial. Once again, Pervasive.SQL fits the bill. Its ability to scale from applications for the single user to ones for the Web - without redevelopment - means that IT costs remain low without infringing on customer satisfaction.
